Use the complete reporting package
Start with the latest audited annual report, then read interim statements and subsequent JSE announcements. The package includes primary statements, accounting policies, notes, management discussion, governance disclosures and the independent auditor’s report. Numbers without notes are incomplete. Compare multiple years and confirm whether acquisitions, discontinued operations or accounting changes disrupt comparability.
Income is not cash
The income statement reports revenue and expenses under accrual accounting. Track revenue growth, gross or operating margin, finance costs, tax and earnings attributable to ordinary owners. Ask whether profit depends on one-off gains or estimates. The cash-flow statement reconciles a different reality: operating cash, investment in assets and financing. Persistent profit without operating cash deserves explanation.
Interrogate the balance sheet
Assets show controlled resources; liabilities show obligations; equity is the residual. Examine receivable ageing, inventory movement, cash restrictions, borrowings by maturity and currency, lease liabilities and related-party balances. Goodwill and other intangibles may require impairment assumptions. Compare short-term assets with near-term obligations, but remember that simplistic current ratios miss asset quality and committed facilities.
Read the auditor and notes
An unmodified audit opinion provides reasonable, not absolute, assurance that statements are free of material misstatement under the applicable framework. Qualified, adverse or disclaimer opinions require careful attention. Key audit matters highlight areas of significant auditor attention, not necessarily wrongdoing. Notes reveal valuation methods, contingencies, pledges, segment performance, share transactions and events after reporting date.
Turn statements into a research trail
Build a five-year spreadsheet using consistent units. Calculate margins, return on equity, debt measures, interest coverage, cash conversion and per-share trends. Check whether share issuance diluted owners. Reconcile management claims with numbers and compare to peers using similar accounting. Submit questions through formal investor-relations channels and preserve source documents; never fill gaps with rumours.
Evidence standards for Jamaican investors
Use primary material in this order: the issuer’s dated JSE filing; audited financial statements and notes; the security’s legal offering document; then regulator and central-bank publications. News and broker research can provide context but should link back to evidence. Save the document and date accessed because webpages, rates and product terms change. Separate reported facts from estimates, and label calculations that you make yourself.
Costs, tax and suitability
Returns should be considered after brokerage, bid-offer spreads, custody or administration charges, fund expenses and applicable taxes. Rules can depend on residency, account type and instrument and may change after publication. Confirm current treatment with Tax Administration Jamaica or a qualified professional. Educational analysis cannot account for a reader’s income stability, debt, goals, loss capacity or legal circumstances; it is not personalised investment advice.
A practical decision record
Before investing, write the objective, expected holding period, currency need, main risks, valuation basis, maximum acceptable position and exit or review conditions. Note which official documents were checked and what remains uncertain. Wait at least overnight when urgency or excitement is driving the decision. Afterward, review the thesis on a schedule and after material official disclosures—not minute by minute. A clear record reduces hindsight bias and makes mistakes teachable.
Questions to ask the provider
Ask for the product’s full legal name, issuer, regulator, latest financial information, fee schedule, dealing deadline, settlement period and complaint process. Request explanations in writing. For securities, ask whether the quoted price is firm, how long it is valid, what quantity is available and what happens if an order is only partly filled. For pooled products, ask when the unit price is calculated and under what conditions redemptions can be delayed. For bonds, clarify accrued interest, call provisions and ranking. A professional provider should distinguish facts from projections and should not object to independent verification. Also confirm how statements, tax documents and notices will be delivered, and whom to contact when records appear incorrect or incomplete.
Scenario testing before committing money
Replace a single forecast with at least three scenarios. In a weak case, reduce revenue or distributions, raise borrowing costs, allow the Jamaican dollar to move against the relevant currency and assume that selling takes longer than expected. In a middle case, use conservative evidence rather than management’s most ambitious target. In a stronger case, still include fees, taxes and execution costs. The purpose is not to predict the future perfectly. It is to discover whether one adverse variable would make the plan fail, and whether the potential reward reasonably compensates for risks that cannot be removed.
Ongoing monitoring without overtrading
Monitoring should follow the frequency at which useful information appears. Company results, material JSE announcements, fund reports, central-bank releases and changes to a security’s terms deserve attention. Daily price noise usually does not change a long-term business thesis. Maintain a short dashboard of the few indicators that matter, such as cash coverage, leverage, concentration, maturity dates or progress toward the goal. Investigate breaches, document conclusions and avoid trading merely to feel active. If facts disprove the original case, reassess calmly; if only price changed, first determine why.
Final checklist
Confirm the exact legal security and account ownership; verify the intermediary on the FSC’s official channels; read fees and withdrawal or sale terms; test the effect of a meaningful price decline, rate increase or currency move; avoid money needed soon; and retain confirmations. Diversification reduces some risks but cannot prevent losses. If a return seems unusually certain, pause and verify independently.
